Late C19th carved alabaster 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture of The Lion Monument, known as "The Lion of Lucerne".

Well-carved souvenir reduction of the iconic hewn rock-relief sculpture designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen the Danish sculptor and carved by Lucas Ahorn in 1820-21 , found in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The sculpture commemorates the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.

The noble lion is depicted wounded and dying , a spear in his back , his protective paw rests upon the lilies of France, a Swiss shield to his front.

A striking and well-executed reduction in creamy-white alabaster with a grey vein . Now fixed to its original ovoid plinth base which has an historic repaired break/crack . The sculpture itself in good original condition , with minor marks and surface scratches.
