Portrait of Sir Joseph Dobbie by Cowan Dobson C.1915.

Description

Fine portrait in oil on canvas of the Scottish Liberal MP Sir Joseph Dobbie (1862-1943) by the acclaimed portrait painter Cowan Dobson c.1915. Shown half length in typical Edwardian morning dress, staring out of the canvas through a pair of distinctive gold pince nez spectacles. Clearly signed by Cowan Dobson and dated ’15 in the lower left hand corner. Excellent condition previously restored and relaid onto canvas and presented in a good quality gilt frame. With the original presentation plaque preserved on the rear detailing the gift of the painting to Sir Joseph himself by the Royal Scots Recruiting Committee in recognition of his public service during the First World War.

Cowan Dobson (1894-1980) was one of Scotland’s best known portrait painters of the first half of the 20th.c. As well as military and political figures he made a successful career painting the portraits of the fashionable young women of London society. His works can be found in the collection of National Galleries Scotland.
