Japanese Meiji Period Lacquered Wood Sanddab Netsuke

An extremely unusual Japanese Meiji period netsuke or button depicting a Pacific Sanddab fish, superbly detailed it is made from carved wood and is Maki-e lacquered with what appears to be shagreen on the back of the fish, finished with inset glass eyes the underside of the fish was gilded, some of which has worn over the years and an old collectors label can be seen.
This exquisite netsuke is anatomically accurate and is in excellent condition measuring 2 inches in length; a similar item can be found on the Ashmolean museum’s website via the link below:
