Gillows: Fine Inlaid Burr Walnut Davenport

Description

GILLOWS of LANCASTER: a very good quality mid-19th century burr walnut SLIDING-TOP DAVENPORT in remarkable condition.

This particularly fine example has all the typically useful features including: A beautiful fire-gilt cast brass gallery; original red morocco leather writing surface; fine walnut veneered fitted interior with two small drawers; hinged "secret" pen-and-ink drawer; large slides to both sides; three main long drawers to one side (dummies opposite); carved and turned feet with original castors and a sliding top.

The fine burr walnut veneers used throughout are inlaid with stringing and marquetry emblems to the corners. Signed "GILLOWS" to the leading edge. 34ins high; 20ins deep. A truly Gorgeous Example!
