Georgian Silver Brandy / Wine Decanter Label London 1822

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Woodbridge Antiques

A very stylish, George IV, solid silver Brandy Decanter label. Iconic in its Georgian style, it is rectangular in form with reeded edges and a neat engraved pattern in the centre of each border (see images), with the words'' BRANDY'' engraved beautifully in the centre. It hangs from a silver chain to enable the hanging around the neck of a decanter.

Hallmarks are clearly visible on the back of the label for the London Assay Office with a date mark for 1822, along with the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver and the maker''s mark for William Ellerby (this is an overstrike mark, which usually suggests that a silversmith''s business had been acquired by another and the new business placed their own mark over the original).
