A Rare 18th Century Silver Mountain Label - Female Silversmith

Description

A rare silver wine label, dating from C1770. This wonderful example is in banner form with 'Mountain' engraved to the centre. It is decorated with a crisp feather edge border and supported on a belcher style chain. The name Mountain dates from C1739-1827 and was an earlier name for Sherry. Sherry started to supersede Mountain in the third quarter of the 18th Century. This example is made by the Female silversmith Margaret Binley - wife of Richard Binley. Her mark was entered after the death of her husband from 1764-1778, making this a interesting and collectable piece. Dimensions below.

Hallmarks :- Clear and readable. Often small items were only part marked and this piece has the Maker's marks, dating it to C1770.
