Meissen Porcelain Moulded Saucer. Harbour Scene, C. 1735.

18th century
Description

A fine Meissen Porcelain saucer, c. 1735. Painted with a harbour scene, within a quarelobed panel of scrolls, leaves and strapwork, (Laub-und Bandelwerk). The reverse moulded with a continuous lappet motif, alternately gilded and lustred.

Underglaze blue crossed swords. Gilt number ‘68’, impressed ‘2’.

Diameter - 12cm, 4 6/8”.

Condition - Perfect. No damage. No restoration.

Sources for painted harbour scenes painted on Meissen porcelain, were derived from prints after paintings by Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, and were used extensively from the early 1720s until the 1750s. The Meissen factory actively sought folios of prints, as well as illustrated books and individual prints after the work of European artists; particularly popular were those painted by Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), Jan van de Velde (1593-1641), and Johann Wilhelm Baur (d.1640).
