Description

This mid 19th century Turkmen Engsi (door-rug), made by Yomut tribes, has an extremely powerful presence. The central 'tree' contains a magnificent 'ram's horn' at the top which is important enough to break through the inner border - also seen in the lower upper panel with the bottom panel containing stylised trees - symbolising the '3-level universe' where the roots of the tree are in the underworld; the trunk in the earthly world and the branches reaching into the spiritual realms. The rug is in very good condition and the selvedges have been expertly re-placed and re-bound.
