Rue des Fontenelles has dated this piece to the 1900s.
He travelled widely across the south of England, observing and painting in Surrey, Berkshire, Kent and Sussex. During his lifetime English rural life changed out of all recognition, but Fox tried to capture the idealised dream of the perfect English countryside as it was during Victorian times with his delicate watercolour landscapes. His paintings provide a beautiful record of life at the turn of the century.

Fox became well-established by the early 1900 's and had exhibited over 20 paintings at the Royal Academy by 1913, having had his first one accepted in 1880 at the age of 25. His reputation spread throughout the provinces and he exhibited in such prestigious galleries and exhibitions as the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and Manchester City Art Gallery. A well-respected artist, Henry Charles Fox was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1889. The following year he exhibited a total of 113 paintings there.

Although mainly a watercolour artist, Fox also painted in oil and produced many large etchings of rural scenes. His paintings were very popular in the early 1900's, possibly because of their tranquillity in a world embarking on the industrial revolution, and in fact are still highly collectable today.
