Well-composed and observed painting depicting the Venetian lagoon , looking towards the Basilica of Maria Della Salute and with St.Mark's Square ,the Campanile and the Doge's Palace together with the 'Bridge of Sighs', in the hinterland. Well-defined skyline showing the various landmark views of "La Serenissima " , a scene familiar to those approaching the city from the sea into The Grand Canal .

The foreground showing life on the Grand Canal with merchant and fishing vessels together with gondolas and traghetti traversing the scene . Good attention to detail throughout, with multiple figures and architectural study.

In excellent condition, benefitting from having been professionally cleaned approximately 10 years ago . Good bright colours and stable surface with no paint losses or deterioration.

The reverse of the canvas showing two minor repaired punctures , invisible on the front of the canvas.

Signed in bottom right-hand side by the artist .

St. John Mulholland (1839-1910) was a British visual artist , being known and recognised for his views of Venice . A similar painting hangs in the Leamington Spa Gallery and Museum.

Similar works by the artist were sold at auction by Christies , Melbourne, Australia 06/05/03 for £7411, and by Lawrence's , Crewkerne , England 13/10/2017 for £4450 (catalogued as being in poor condition ) .

The quality swept giltwood frame in excellent order .
