Description

A superb quality mid-19th century cast bronze HALF BUSHEL MEASURE in great condition. This substantial; impressive and heavy measure is engraved: "Imperial Half Bushel ~ Division of Eastern Ainsty ~ West Riding Yorkshire ~ and dated 1857. Very difficult to find these days. 19.5ins diameter; 7.5ins high. (49.5 x 19cms)

***These measures were used by Customs & Excise Officers to check that market stallholders were not under-selling their customers. The penalty for repeat offenders was a heavy fine or even deportation to Australia!
