As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this unusual Edo period Japanese Ivory Netsuke and desk seal, depicting hotei (one of the seven luckys Gods ) stood upon the carved oval base which also doubles as the seal , he wears highly decorative robes, his treasure sack over his shoulder, his usual jovial expression and a large exposed belly, a lovely tactile colour and a very unusual item.
Notes: ''Hotei'' - God of fortune, guardian of the children, patron of diviners and barmen, and also the God of popularity. He is depicted as a fat, smiling, bald man, He always appears half naked, as his clothes are not wide enough to cover his enormous belly, He carries a bag on his shoulders which is, according to the beliefs, loaded with fortunes for those who believe in his virtues.
Condition report: - Lovely used condition, some red pigmentation to the underside and miniscule fleabite to seal rim .
