Exquisite Jennens & Bettridge Jewellery Box C.1850 - Girl and Dog Painting

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

An exquisite and quite charming jewellery box dating to around 1860 and made from lacquered papier mache by the most famous of English makers, Jennens and Bettridge, signed on the underside " J Bettridge Late Jennens & Bettridge, Birmingham ".

Jennens and Bettridge were an important manufacturer based in Birmingham, with branches in London and eventually Paris and New York. By the 1850s Jennens & Bettridge were known as the foremost papier mache producers and were appointed Royal Warrants to King George IV, William IV and Prince Albert.

The exterior of this box is inlaid with Mother of Pearl with it's iridescent qualities, lavishly gilded with hand painted floral panels around the sides and back.

The top hand-painted panel is of course what makes this so desirable and collectible with a scene of a sleeping girl with a Victorian hoop and stick game by her side and her dog guarding her, I think a flat haired Retriever; about as charming as they come.

The box comes complete with a working lock and key and once opened reveals the fitted interior, professionally relined with a removable tray which incorporates a full width ring cushion to the rear which would accommodate around eight or ten rings.

Victorian in era an in superb condition measuring 12" x 8 1/2" x 5 1/4" tall with the internal tray measuring approximately 9" x 6".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
