Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Between these legs there are cast continuous garlands ... exceptional.

The handles each side are used to easily roll back the top to reveal a removable trivet, the butter would sit on top and crushed ice on the underside top keep the butter chilled.
The two pins attached to the chains keep the lid attached to the base and can be removed to dismantle for easier cleaning.

The underside has a full mark for the well renowned silversmith, Martin Hall and Co, dating to c.1880, Victorian in era.
Elegant and very usable, excellent condition, measuring 8 3/4" handle to handle and 5 1/4" deep x 5" tall.
