Early 18th Century Japanese Imari Vase & Cover

Description

A splendid early 18th Century Imari vase and domed cover with a Komainu finial. This baluster vase from the Edo period, has four lobbed reserves, each painted with foliage and chrysanthemums, the national flower of Japan. The ground is profusely decorated with further flowers and C and S scrolls in underglaze blue and over glaze iron red and gilt. The domed cover has a distinctive iron red Komainu finial. The condition of the vase is good with no chips, the surface decoration is in good condition. There is is evidence of a firing crack to the domed cover, this is minor and is shown clearly in the photographs. This is not detrimental to the appearance of this outstanding piece of ceramic art.
