19th century
Description

19th century oil on canvas attributed to the 19th century painter Henry Schouten. The still life of flowers in a vase is mounted in a wooden frame of the period. The painting is typical of his floral still lifes and is signed using one of his many pseudonyms.

Henry Henry Schouten (Indonesia, ca. 1857 - Brussels , 1927) was a Belgian painter, most famous as animal and landscape painter. He also used the pseudonym Joseph Klaas. He graduated from the Academy of Brussels (1876-1881). He underwent a strong influence by the animal painter Alfred Verwee .

He was primarily a smooth realistic animal painter: cows, sheep, horses, chickens and farm animals But he also painted farmers and shepherds in their area, hunting dogs people with animals. He also painted a number of still lifes with flowers or fruit.

Schouten was highly talented and very often socialised and painted in partnership with many other artists of his era. He often signed works under different names and known to have used in excess of 22 signatures.
