Description

A good quality and attractive Victorian harlequin davenport made from beautifully figured walnut and burr walnut. The hidden sprung stationary compartment has a walnut interior with 3 small drawers and pigeon holes with a very good fret carved gallery above. The piano shaped fall opens to reveal a 2 drawer interior and an adjustable pull out writing/reading slope with green and gold tooled leather writing surface an ebonised pen tray, space for 2 ink pots and a lidded compartment. The panelled front with well carved supports resting on a concave shaped plinth with turned bun feet and hidden castors. The right hand side with 4 mahogany lined drawers all with turned walnut knobs, brass escutcheons and working locks (with keys). The left side with false drawers and matching turned knobs and escutcheons. The freestanding back with matching figured walnut panel and applied mouldings. The whole in very good condition with good patina. Davenports of this design are often referred to as Harlequin, Pop up, Piano top, or Jack in the box davenports.
