Rare Large Swinging Mystery Clock La Victoire by Émile Bruchon (Active 1880 -1910)

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

Standing at 3 1/2 ft in height this is the rare large version of the French swinging mystery clock. The figure is La Victoire by Émile Bruchon, beautifully and boldly modelled in bronze patinated metal. He holds a loft the pendulum which swings gently with seemingly no means to maintain its momentum.

The secret is that this is a compound pendulum, a small, heavy pendulum swings in harmony inside the bronzed sphere to actuate the movement.

The winged figure of victory holds the large pendulum aloft triumphantly which swings gently to-and-fro. The modelling is beautifully sharp and crisp, full of drama and movement. The patination of the figure is a lovely deep bronze with the wings and the rocky base having a slight coloured tint. The two spheres of the pendulum have a beautiful bronze patination. The figure has the incised signature 'Bruchon' and a mark 'Paris'. The mahogany pedestal in the pictures is also available.

Émile Bruchon is listed in Dictionary if sculptors, Pierre Kjellberg as working in 1880. He was a student of Mathurin Moreau.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. It runs for 8 days. We have a video available of the clock running.

Condition is excellent, the patinated finish of the figure is in excellent original condition, just some occasional marks, rubs or discolouration. The bronzed finish of the pendulum is also excellent, just a couple of small dents to the rear cover and the silver steel rods of the pendulum are pitted with some plating lacking. Some very slight evidence of old repairs to the dial letters. The gilded parts are beautifully clean and bright. A rare and stunning clock to add to your collection.

Sculptors mark and Paris mark on the figure.

Complete with a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
