Antique French Gilt Bronze Drum Head Clock by Louis Japy

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A large, imposing and heavy original antique French gilt-bronze clock. It is a beautifully made drum head clock in the classical style of Louis XVI and retailed by G. Philippe, Palais Royal. The movement is mounted in a large drum with super lions mask handles and a large urn to the top. It stands on an elaborate and heavily modelled base with laurel leaves and large scrolls and sturdy, reeded corner columns.

The clock is modelled in the round and the rear door is glazed with frosted glass. To base has fabric backed sound frets to the four sides. The large dial is also gilt bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and is complete with it's original blued steel hands.

The French movement is by Louis Japy and is of high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running.

G. Philippe is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers at the Gallery Montpensier, Palais Royal, Paris in 1870.

Condition of the case is excellent, beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration, there are occasional marks. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. We have renewed the red fabric. The frosted rear door has some slight marks.

Louis Japy mark on the movement backplate along with the retailer's mark of G. Philippe
