English Silver Full Hunter Pocket Watch by Grinberg & Reichmann, 1875

An antique English silver full hunter pocket watch by Grinberg & Reichmann of Brighton, 1875.

The watch has a key-wound fusee movement which is working nicely. The movement hinges out the front of the case, as shown in the photos, and it is protected by an inner cover upon which is scratched the name of a previous owner.

The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the three covers for London 1875, with a case maker’s mark for John Fleckner, a case maker from Earlsdon in Coventry… it is usual for the case and movement to be made by different factories. The case has some fairly gentle unevenness, mainly to the back, and there are traces of the engine turned detail which has mostly worn away.

The small button on the top of the stem pushes in to release the front cover. Inside there is a glass lens which is in good condition, just a little marking from what appears to be the remnants of an old watchmaker’s sticker.

The dial is signed Grinberg & Reichman, Brighton. To the naked eye, it looks in good condition. If viewed through a magnifying loupe then a couple of faint hairline cracks are visible. Grinberg & Reichman were listed as railway watch manufacturers in 1878 but by 1885, Grinberg was listed as working alone.
