16th Century Carved Oak Coffer

Description

A fine 16th Century French oak coffer of heavy construction, Decorated with chip carvings. Similar examples of these chip carved designs can be found on medieval Hutch chests dating from the 12th/13th centuries. This particular example has excellent carving and a lovely patina. The lock plate is a later addition and the back stiles have been tipped to level the chest, which is a common repair on most early chests. The overall condition is excellent.
