A Rare and Unusual Silver Desk Thermometer and Paperweight

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly unusual piece of early George V silver. This rare piece is a desk thermometer-cum-paperweight. The waisted base is shaped, hallmarked silver with an inset brass panel to the top. The thermometer is mounted to the centre and to the sides are Fahrenheit measurements in increments of 20°. The base is loaded giving the item an extra use as a paperweight. A most charming masculine piece, with a practical purpose.

Condition :- Very good, with no splits or breaks to the silver. There are some pin prick marks to the silver and a very slight amount of rippling, all commensurate with age and use. The thermometer is possibly a replacement with the original probably being mercury filled.

Hallmarks :- Clear and readable.

Maker :- Joseph Gloster Ltd.

Date :- Birmingham 1913.

Height :- 1.75 cms.
