He established his reputation and career painting the gardens of English country houses in the decades before the first world war.

Of the three watercolours here the view of an extraordinary topiary hedge with hills beyond is most typical of his work. The others, of the Strid in Bolton Wood and a carpet of bluebells, being of less formal landscapes. Each is signed in the picture, the view of the hedge is also dated 1911, and are all presented in a period card mounts. Some foxing to the formal garden view and fading to the view of bluebells.
