Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
Very unusually it carries the original English language maker’s label for Abdul Aziz wood carver and papier maché maker of 3rd Bridge, Srinagar, Kashmir. Srinagar is sited beside the beautiful Lake Dal and is famous for its Mughal gardens, its houseboats and the floating lotus plants which carpet the surface of the lake near the shore producing their stunning blossoms in July and August. Appropriate then that the lotus had been chosen as the decorative theme for this amazing suite of furniture. Not only do the plant’s leaves and flowers wind over the backs of the chairs as well as the doors upstand and side panels of the the sideboard, but the chair seats, the top of the sideboard and the table top are each carved in imitation of its large flat floating lily pads. Note how the decoration also continues up the legs of each piece, across the rear of the chair backs and also the unusual pierced and carved frieze running around the inside of the table top.

A truly unique collection of Colonial Indian furniture, presented in excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Paper maker’s label to the underside of the table.
