Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The guls incorporate a vegetable-dye rose-pink - an unusual but early colour also seen in the inner border. The rug oozes quality and has a strong Turkmen presence - an indication of the Afshar origins in eastern Turkistan before their mass migrations into Persia and eastern Anatolia in the 11th century.
