Fine Louis Xvi Style Mahogany and Brass Tambour Ladies Writing Desk

Description

A very good quality Louis XVI Style mahogany and brass French Tambour Ladies writing desk / Bonheur du jour late 19th Century.

This attractive desk has a rouge marble with a surrounding brass fretted gallery below which are three drawers with brass moulded surround and handles. The tambour front having finely inlaid brass strips to each roll slides back into the desk when the front drawer is opened. Once the drawer is opened the angled writing slope can be opened to reveal a fitted interior with a further three drawers and leather tooled writing slop with hollowed shelf for pens.

The is supported by four turned and fluted tapering legs with brass mounts to the top terminating on brass sabots. Being brass inlay finished to all sides enables this fine desk to stand freely within the room.

The central drawer having an excellent quality brass lock stamped “Duvivier Paris”.

Locks by Duvivier have been seen on early Francoise Linke and Krieger furniture. Duvivier was a locksmith on the same street as Linke's and Zwiener's workshops on the Faubourg St. Antoine. Duvivier is known to have made fine locks for a number of the leading ébenistes of the late nineteenth century, including Maison Millet, Antoine Krieger and François Linke.

Offered in excellent condition this is a very fine and attractive French desk that will work in most settings making it a fine addition to the home.
