18thc Longcase Clock. Vale of Coleshill.

18th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A classic example of an early Georgian Longcase clock in truly original condition. A pleasure to offer for sale.

A typical Georgian oak case of simple but appealing design with long trunk door and stepped pediment hood.

The 8 day, 5 pillar movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff.

The square brass dial has a silvered chapter ring with engraved black Roman numerals, gilded spandrels, and a matted centre. A subsidiary seconds dial and an aperture date dial. Importantly, there are both internal and external minute rings typical of the changeover period between one and two handed clocks.

JOHN VALE worked in the Georgian market town of COLESHILL (WARKS.) between 1710 to 1760.

Supplied with original winding key (always a good sign a clock has been looked after) and complete with 12 mths guarantee.

All cards accepted.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock enclosed within a timber cabinet, widely produced throughout the 18th century in Great Britain.

These clocks were typically constructed with solid oak, mahogany, or walnut cases housing a brass movement with cast brass spandrels and silvered dial rings.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut movement gears, square or arched brass dials with cast corner spandrels, and weight-driven mechanisms within solid timber casing.

Positioning a longcase clock in an entrance hall, stair landing, or formal reception room creates an architectural focal point that bridges traditional horology with contemporary design.

Keep the clock in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct heat sources, oil the movement every three to five years with specialised clock oil, and wax the cabinet timber periodically with natural beeswax.
