Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Clearly stamped for Atkinson & Phillipson on the candle holders, also marked The Excelsior Hughes Patent. Excellent condition, later paintwork to the bodies, original hinges and latches all working. Sold with a good pair of later wrought iron brackets painted to match. Could be wired for electric bulbs or would work well as garden lighting.

Atkinson & Phillipson were a long established coach builders who also produced railway carriages for George Stephenson. In the mid 1890.s they began to develop 'horse-less carriages', producing what they called a 'Steam Powered Motor-Carriage' in 1897.
