Early Antique French Rosewood Portico Clock, French - Circa 1840.

Description

Early Antique French Rosewood Portico Clock.

~ French - Circa 1840 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled and running ~~

A fine and early Louis Philippe period portico clock, rosewood veneered and inlaid with stringing and marquetry with ormolu mounts. Rosewood has a beautiful figure and the marquetry is delicately inlaid with floral motifs. It is modelled as a classical portico, four rosewood columns with fine inlaid stringing and ormolu capitals support the top with the movement hanging below. The large ormolu pendulum, modelled as swirling foliage and fitted with faux temperature compensation, swings below.

The dial is enamel on copper with a lovely large ormolu surround and features the Paris clockmaker / retailers mark on the dial.

The French movement is of excellent quality and has the long tail back cock and external strike arm return spring of earlier movement. The clockmakers / retailers mark "Troup à Paris" is on both the dial and the movement backplate. As usual with these clocks, it originally had a silk suspension but because of the weight of the pendulum this has been altered at some time to a spring suspension. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the rosewood veneer has a good polish and the ormolu is bright and clean. There are some minor losses of veneer, particularly the front corners of the base, and some minor marks / scratches etc. The quarter beading on the step of the base may have a couple of small losses at the back. The dial is also in very good condition, no chips or scratches.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
