Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The bar needle is jewelled and dampened by a stop pin in the upper surface.

The case is closed with two brass hooks and eyes situated on the sides to enable the case to be placed on a flat surface for reading the clinometer. The two brass hinges are let in to the case and pinned.

The instrument is in excellent condition. The case is 3" square x 3/4" deep, the glazed aperture measuring 2 1/2" in diameter.
