1919 Waltham Vanguard Railroad Hunter Pocket Watch

An antique Waltham Vanguard full hunter pocket watch, railroad grade.

The watch has a top quality stem-winding movement, 23 jewel Vanguard grade, adjusted five positions (railroad grade), which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number 23,051,606 dates it back to 1919. It is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The railroad watch came about after a terrible train crash in Ohio in 1891 brought about a standardisation of railroad timekeeping that stimulated watch design, with the aim of improved accuracy… Waltham’s advertising tag line was, “Where accuracy and precision are essential, Waltham watches are chosen”.

This particular watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made by the Dennison Watch Case Company… Aaron Dennison had close associations with Waltham, and also produced cases for many other watch companies. The case has light surface marks and a slight indentation to the back but overall is very acceptable for a 1919 piece.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, the glass is in very nice condition. The signed double sunk dial is in beautiful condition.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
