A Wonderful Early Victorian Silver Lidded Butter Dish

19th century
Description

A wonderful silver and glass butter dish from early in Queen Victoria's reign. This interesting piece has a white opaline glass body which is ribbed and frosted to the outside. To the rim are two raised 'peg' handles used for locating the hallmarked silver lid. The lid is shaped with scalloped edges and decorated with engraved swirls and acanthus leaves. There are two oval vacant cartouches. To the centre is a intricate cast convolvulus flower in the naturalistic style. A rare and usable item of Victorian silver and glass table ware.

Condition :- Excellent, with no dents or splits to the silver. No cracks to the glass. There is one small chip to the outside edge of one of the peg handles which is difficult to see and commensurate with age and use.

Hallmarks :- Clear and readable.

Date :- Sheffield 1849.

Maker :- Henry Wilkinson.

Height (to top of locating peg) :- 8 cms.

Height (to top of dish) :- 6 cms.
