Jeff Sims Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
These highly desirable items were filled with a coil of sealing wax, with the end emerging from an aperture. The end would be lit and the wax held over the letter or document to form a small pool, into which a seal would be placed. They appear in a number of varied forms and designs, often with the coil of wax visible on the outside and remain a sought after item of antique silver.
