Andrew Cox Antiques has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
To the underside there is a polished pontil and the decanter retains the original mushroom stopper. The Madeira label has a shaped, reeded border and 'Madeira' pierced in the centre. Hallmarked to the rear and supported on a belcher chain, this would make a nice piece for the collector or a usable, practical item.
