This movemnts founding members included Armand Apol , Léon Bartholomé, Alfred Bastien , Géo Bernier, Maurice Blieck and Emile Antoine Coulon. These artists were mostly young students from the Brussels Academy and the association had as aim to return to traditional painting, towards the rich Flemish realistic tradition.

Originally the painters of the Sillon painted in dark, rich but rich colours, with a preference for the use of thick layers of paint, but soon they painted in a lighter, brighter way, and thus their paintings approached works from the beginning of Brabant Fauvist .
