Description

Long late 18th.c. French oak coffer c.1790. In solid oak throughout with a flat (rather than panelled) top with moulded edge, made of inch-thick boards with opening centre section and fixed side pieces. Over an attractive front with shaped panels within a moulded surround either side of a carved roundel at the centre. Shaped and moulded apron and front legs. Panelled sides and rear. The unusual configuration of the lid means a pair of lamps or similar can stand on the top without stopping access to the inside. Alternatively the chest would be easily strong enough to work as a window seat. Note there are no hinges on the lid – as original. Excellent condition and lovely colour and patina.
