Description

An extremely rare Lowestoft Porcelain bell shaped tankard or mug, decorated by the Tulip Painter. Ex Geoffrey Godden Collection.

This is a rare example of the Lowestoft porcelain factory's bell shape mug or tankard C1775. In Goddens second edition of Lowestoft Porcelain 1985 pg 208 the various types of mugs are described. This shape is described as a graceful bell shape, later versions being plainer cylinder shaped. Examples are shown in plates 81,82 &90 of the book.

The piece is further enhance as it's decoration is attributed by Godden to the so called Tulip Painter. The identity of the Tulip Painter isn't recorded and a number of attributions have been made. His work is highly prized amongst collectors.

PROVENANCE: the piece was part of Geoffrey Goddens extensive collection of 18th century porcelain. The labels remain to the base.

This is an extremely rare piece of Lowestoft Porcelain and Golden had the piece professionally restored. The internal and external pictures shown the restoration. The restoration is to a Museum standard and does not alter the displaying of the piece. It's clear that Godden felt the rarity of the shape and decoration warranted the work.
