Rare Brown Stoneware Comic Character Jug C1850

Description

This rare and totally engaging ANTIQUE BROWN STONEWARE COMIC CHARACTER JUG dates from around 1850.

It is modelled as a jovial, rogue-ish character bearing his teeth and sticking out his tongue.

A similar JUG is illustrated in The Illustrated Guide to British Jugs by R.K. HENRYWOOD, Page 209, Plate 580. I think our JUG has even more attitude and 'exhibits considerable naive charm'.

It stands approximately 7.5 inches (19 cm) high.

There is just a small, thin nick underneath the footrim (at 8.00 o'clock in the close-up photo),

Other than this there are no cracks, chips or restoration which is quite amazing considering the JUG may once have been used in a Tavern.
