A good original two-part dresser in dense and dark native Welsh oak. The open plate rack has a bold cornice above four shelves, with original blacksmith-made iron hooks, the lowest with a reeded front, and raised on slender shoes over a base with three drawers above a central silhouette leg flanked by square legs with corner spandrels, united by a potboard.
The backboards are also made using the same dense oak, which is unusual and the base has the rare feature of a narrow plate rack halfway up the back. As in this case, dressers from Cardiganshire sometimes lack handles.
Excellent colour and surface patination.
Teifi valley, Cardiganshire/Carmarthenshire border, circa 1790.
Height: 80.5 inches; 204.5 cms
Width across cornice: 62.75 inches; 159.5 cms
Depth across top of base: 17 inches; 43 cms.
