Description
Late C19th/ early C20th Chinese carved box-wood ceremonial ruyi sceptre. Intricately carved box-wood sceptre with deeply detailed carving depicting multiple Imperial dragons heads with scaled body details. Carved from richly honey-coloured box-wood with superb skill and excellent attention to detail . The centre with 7 open-mouthed dragon heads surrounding and chasing the symbolic flaming pearl of wisdom. In Chinese culture a Ruyi , literally "as desired or as you wish" , is a curved decorative object that serves as a ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism or as a talisman symbolising power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. Traditional ruyi are a long S-shaped handle with a large head , and are fashioned from diverse materials. The ruyi image frequently appears as a motif in Asian art. In excellent undamaged original condition. Has its original flat display stand with locating pegs to the rear .
