After Henry Holiday the Meeting of Dante and Beatrice

1900 - 1920
Description

After Henry Holiday, a sepia art print depicting the Meeting of Dante and Beatrice.

Probably published by Felix Rosenstiel, London, circa 1900. Within a contemporary walnut frame with gilt slip.

The Italian poet Dante Alighieri was a popular subject for many of the Pre-Raphaelite painters. Henry Holiday was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and this painting is based on Dante's autobiographical work 'La Vita Nuova' which describes his love for Beatrice Portinari. Dante concealed his love by pretending to be attracted to other women. The painting depicts an incident when Beatrice, having heard gossip relating to this, refuses to speak to him. The event is shown as Beatrice and two other women walk past the Santa Trinita Bridge in Florence. Beatrice wears a white dress and walks beside her friend Monna Vanna, with Beatrice's maidservant slightly behind.

Holiday was keen to ensure the historical accuracy of the painting, travelling to Florence for research and making clay models of the buildings once back at his studio in London to ensure its accuracy. The original painting is on display at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

Size, including frame 45cm x 61cm.
