Late C19th Italian Carved 'Grand Tour' Souvenir Carved Serpentine Marble Study of "Il Porcellino' or the Ufizzi Boar .

19th century
Description

Late C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir carved serpentine marble study of "Il Porcellino" or the Uffizi boar.

Well executed larger scale green serpentine marble marble reduction after the lost ancient Hellenistic original , a bronze version was cast by the Baroque Master Pietro Tacca (1577-1640) , whilst a marble Roman copy is now on display in the Uffizi Museum, Florence Italy. The sculpture is based upon the Calydonian Boar of Greek Mythology.

Traditionally Tacca's bronze stood in the Mercato Nuovo in the centre of Florence as a fountain feature , the legend arose of placing a coin in the jaws and rubbing the snout to bring good fortune , resulting in a smooth polished surface.

In excellent condition, with well-detailed hide and fur , wild ferocious eyes and gaping mouth with tusk detail. Raised on a canted corner naturalistically-carved integral plinth base . Minor historic chip to rear corner of the base.
