Alfred Sainte-Marie was born and brought up in Paris and was a pupil of Louis Roux. He was particularly talented and known for his painting of genre scenes, animals, hunting scenes and landscapes usually in oil. He had a precise technique and style.

He regularly exhibited his work at the Paris Salon between 1853 and 1870 and has paintings in private collections and commands high prices. His work was sought after as hunting and hounds were an important part of French society.
The painting has recently had a light clean and re-varnish.
