Elmgarden has dated this piece to the Before 1700 period.
It is dated 1661 and the names of Henry Graye and Dorothy Graye are carved on either side, this was no doubt a piece made to commemorate their marriage and the joining of 2 great families.

The Settle has 6 intricately carved back panels and an intricate top rail, in the centre of which we have the entwined initials of H.D.G, these are repeated at the side, 2 other panels show the family Coates of Arms and below 4 large panels declaring the giving of Service to the King, the top of the side pillars are carved with kings heads

The panels are bordered with chevron inlay in Ebony and Box Wood
The bench has an opening seat and Shepherd’s crook arms
The Settle is it is in very good condition considering it is nearly 4 hundred years old, and it is a superb looking piece

The settle is 60” high at the back and 53” wide, it is 24” deep
