Portrait Of A Lady, French, Dated 1838; By Jean-baptiste Louis Germain (1782-1842)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
Oil on canvas.
This captivating female portrait was painted by Jean Baptiste Louis Germain at the peak of his career and immediately after a lengthy period of exhibiting at the Paris Salon. In this highly decorative portrait as much attention is paid to the woman''s luxurious apparel as her facial features. Indeed. The dress in a formal style is white and coral pink silk, and there are various ribbon bows attached to the sleeves and the white silk gauze wrap. Pink was also the most popular colour for women''s dress. This is essentially a portrait celebrating feminine beauty. The portrait is signed and dated at the bottom right ''Germain 1838''. Presented in its fine swept frame.
Jean-Baptiste-Louis Germain was born on 25 August 1782 in Reims France and died on 9 January 1842. His father, a bailiff, had entrusted him to study under Bonnette and Peguchet who were professors in the city of Reims. Afterwards he studied at the convent of the Augustins under M. Clermont who was ...a former teacher at the school of drawing in Reims and then in Paris under Jean-Baptiste Regnault. Some of his commissions include works for Reims Cathedral in 1813 and the Musee de Reims in 1819, and he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1819 to 1836.
