Large Antique English Jewellery Box by a & L Moses C.1860

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A superb quality jewellery box and a wonderful size measuring 12" x 9" x 7". The leather covered box has a military or campaign style folding carrying handle to the top.

The lock is a Bramah lock, used only on the finest of English boxes. The polished brass escutcheon is what is known as a "slider", the key is turned to unlock and the top of the escutcheon is slid down to open the box, to close, the box snaps shut, so the key should never be left inside the box!

Once the box is opened, the top fitted tray is sprung and pops up. The two trays below are both removable, making it easier to find the piece of jewellery you are looking for.

The entire interior is original lined in a rich Amethyst coloured velvet. The box is signed in gold embossing by the maker, A & L Moses, 26 The Hard, Portsea. This signature surrounds an Anchor emblem. Portsea, part of Portsmouth, Hampshire where the HMS Victory is docked, has a long naval history, the shop is described as goldsmiths, jewellers, watch manufacturers, and opticians. They were naval agents and by appointment to Admiralty; it is likely that a smart top-quality box like this would have been purchased by a senior naval officer for his wife.

Excellent condition with minor wear commensurate with age. Victorian in era, dating to around 1860.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
