Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art
As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this truly rare and exceptional quality Shakudo bodied Tea Caddy by the highly regarded Nogawa company , the square form caddy is formed from solid Shakudo, an alloy mixed with Gold to produce the contemporary black patination , the caddy stands upon four solid Silver bracket feet and is decorated to each of the four sides with onlaid mixed metal Flora of the finest quality and detailing , one side details Gold and Silver Chrysanthemums upon Shibuichi stems , the opposing side decorated with Tiger Lilly , the Gold and Silver petals of each Lilly further inlaid with Shakudo detailing , quite breathtaking workmanship, the other two sides decorated with mixed alloy Ferns and Grasses , while the opposing panel displays exquisitely detailed Japanese Andromena , the shoulders of the square form caddy are further inlaid with mixed metal butterflies amidst foliate scrolls , removing the lid reveals a solid silver opening... , the lid itself decorated in staggering detail with a band of geometric inlay below a further mixed metal onlaid floral display, the lid being Silver lined, the container signed to the underside with the factory seal of Nogawa inlaid in Silver, although not countersigned as is sometimes the case , there is no doubt that Nogawa have once again commissioned a highly skilled artist to individually produce this item, as a Tea ceremony piece it was likely made as an important and expensive gift, we can only speculate of course, but it is truly a rare and wonderful Jewel from the great Meiji period .
The condition is simply stunning ( white spots detected on the images are fibres from the gloves used to handle this item )
