John Howkins Antiques has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The writing slope opens to a very good interior which retains the original tooled leather writing surface, 2 brass and glass ink pots, 2 mahogany lidded compartments with turned ivory pulls and a stamp slope. The upper slope opens and unusually contains a lift out tray with pierced carrying handles. Once the tray is removed the 3 secret drawers can be revealed by a hidden sprung catch on the right hand side of the ink pot. The lower slope opens via 2 inlaid brass catches to a storage area with letter holder. This fine writing slope also retains the original working Bramah lock with keys. The box has an inlaid shaped brass cartouche to the top with engraved presentation " Presented to MR THOMAS CRIER by a few of his CUPAR FRIENDS 1857". Cupar is a town in Fife, Scotland.
