A Fantastic Japanese Edo Period Lacquer Box - Solid Gold Kurikara Dragon Sword By Goto Mitsutaka

As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this exceptional quality and condition Edo period lacquer box and tray , the lid of the box decorated with an onlaid solid gold mount by the highly regarded metal artist Goto Mitsutaka( 1721-84 ) , the Gold mount depicts a dragon sword of Fudo Myo-o against a red flame in red takamaki-e flanked by the attendants Kongara and Seitaka standing on wave-splashed rocks against a ground of takamaki-e lotus leaves, gold and silver kirigane and dense nashiji, repeated on the exterior with further bands of waves, the interior with the Sanscrit syllable for Fudo in a gold lacquer medallion set on a lotus platform and emitting celestial rays, the ground matching kirigane and nashiji; the underside of the tray and the interior of box and base dense nashiji , the box complete with its original Tomobako ( outer box ) inscribed as follows:
