Victorian Pair of Copeland Mask Face Majolica Jardinieres

19th century
Description

Very striking and unusual pair of English majolica jardinieres by the Copeland manufactory. Hexagonal shape set on stepped pedestal foot with ornate moulded rim. A deep red textured ground overlaid with cream and green-grey scrolls, swirls and acanthus leaf type decoration and each side set with a female mask face. The sides are framed with ochre yellow, along with the rim and a salmon pink bands of blocks runs under the rim. A matching band sits at the top of the foot which has textured steps in ochre and green-grey. Eye-popping turquoise ground inside. Each has an impressed Copeland mark and date code for July 1873.

They measure 8 3/4" high, 8 1/2" across face to face and 9" across the diagonal. Condition is very good with just a few small points to note: there is a small chip to the moulded decoration on the scrolled rim of one and some frits to the noses of some of the faces. Crazing inside and a little oxidisation and slight yellowing to the turquoise near the top and a small chip inside the bottom of base of one.
